Youth Auditions

Marin Symphony Youth Program is now enrolling student musicians for our Spring Semester beginning on February 5, 2017.

Participation includes weekly rehearsals every Sunday at College of Marin in Kentfield,
and a Spring Concert on May 7, 2017.

TUITION: Overture $275, Crescendo $325, MSYO $375.
REHEARSALS: Every Sunday at College of Marin in Kentfield (Overture 11:30-12:40, Crescendo 1:00-2:40, MSYO 3:00-6:00)

-All applicants must study weekly with a private teacher on their orchestral instrument (piano lessons do not count).
-All applicants must be enrolled in their school band or orchestra if it’s available to them.
-Applicants should plan to attend all weekly Sunday rehearsals and Concert Performances.

MARIN SYMPHONY YOUTH PROGRAMS 2016-17 SEASON

MARIN SYMPHONY OVERTURE STRING ENSEMBLE

Program Requirements:
Ages 8-13. Must study privately with a teacher on your orchestral instrument. We strongly encourage all of our students to participate in their school music programs.
Eligibility guidelines for Overture are:

  • Completion of at least 1 year of study on violin, viola, cello or bass with a private teacher and/or in a school music program
  • Proficiency in reading rhythmic values from whole to eighth notes and rests
  • A basic understanding of accidentals and key signatures and their effect on fingerings
  • Some knowledge of shifting is helpful but not necessary

Audition Requirements:
1. Scales — Overture applicants should perform a scale of your choice in as many octaves as you are comfortable (2 octaves recommended).

2. Prepared piece — Overture applicants should perform one solo piece that you have worked on with your teacher. You do not need to bring an accompanist.

3. Orchestral excerpt — coming soon.

MARIN SYMPHONY CRESCENDO ORCHESTRA

Program Requirements:
Ages 10-17. Must study privately with a teacher on your orchestral instrument. We strongly encourage all of our students to participate in their school music programs.

Audition Requirements:
1. Scales — Crescendo applicants should perform 2 scales and arpeggios of your choice in as many octaves as you are comfortable (2 octaves recommended). One scale should be played with speed and accuracy and the other should be played slowly with the best tone possible.
String players should be able to demonstrate a variety of bow strokes, dynamics and articulation.

2. Prepared piece — Crescendo applicants should perform one solo piece that you have worked on with your teacher. You do not need to bring an accompanist.

3. Orchestral excerpt — coming soon.

MARIN SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Program Requirements:
Participant age ranges from 12-18. Students must study privately with a teacher on their orchestral instrument and we encourage all of our students to participate in their school music programs. Most members in the orchestra have been playing their instrument for four years or longer.  Students are required to set aside time outside of rehearsals to learn their music and are strongly urged to work on their parts with private teachers at their teachers’ convenience.

Audition Requirements:
1) Scales and Arpeggios: You will only have to play the one the conductor asks for.

Flute:

      (2 OCTAVES) MAJOR KEYS: C, D, E-flat, E, F, G, A-flat, A

Oboe:
(2 OCTAVES) MAJOR KEYS: C, D-flat, D, E-flat

Clarinet:
(2 OCTAVES) CONCERT PITCH: F, G, A-flat, B-flat C, D, 3 octaves: E-flat, E

Bassoon:
(2 OCTAVES) MAJOR KEYS: E-flat, F, G, A-flat, A, B-flat, (3 OCTAVES): C

Violin 1 & 2
(3 OCTAVES) MAJOR KEYS: G, A-flat, A, B-flat, B, C, D, E-flat, E

Viola & Cello
(3 OCTAVES) MAJOR KEYS: C, D, E-flat, E, F, G, A-flat, A

Bass:
(2 OCTAVES) MAJOR KEYS: E, F, G, A-flat, A, B-flat, C

Horn:
(2 OCTAVES) CONCERT PITCH MAJOR KEYS: A-flat, A, B-flat, C
(written pitches E-flat, E, F, G)

Trumpet:
(2 OCTAVES) CONCERT PITCH MAJOR KEYS: F, G, A-flat, A, B-flat, C

Trombone:
(2 OCTAVES) CONCERT PITCH MAJOR KEYS: F, G, A-flat, A, B-flat, C

Percussion:
Concert snare drum roll (instrument provided) soft-loud-soft, 3 of the basic snare drum rudiments (flam, ruffs, paradiddles, etc), and a C Major scale on the glockenspiel (instrument provided by MSYO)

2) One solo piece that represents your best abilities: The piece should be from the standard repertoire and demonstrate slow and fast playing. The piece does not need to be memorized but memorization is highly recommended if you wish to be considered for a leadership position within your section. Do not bring an accompanist.

3) Excerpts: A downloadable linke for the orchestral excerpts will be provided to interested applicants in the coming weeks. Violins may choose to audition for Violin 1 or Violin 2. If you would like to audition for a Principal string chair, including Concertmaster, please let us know in the comment box of your application.
